Juice Beauty Products: Organic, But Are They Worth It? More and more food products these days claim to be “organic.” This trend is obvious whether you shop at a national chain store for your groceries or a “whole foods” or “all natural” shop. Increasingly, the term organic is being applied to products other than foods. The marketing ploy seems to be, “If organic foods are good for us, then products that we use for our skin, hair, pets, lawns, or nails should be organic, as well.” Juice Beauty is a company that uses the term “organic” throughout its website and claims that it is “on a mission to bring pleasurable organic beauty solutions to people worldwide.” As a person who has been skeptical from birth, I wanted to know if this company really has a superior product to offer, or if it is just a lot of hype, like much of the cosmetic industry. After looking into the claims, and trying some of the preparations, here are the conclusions I was able to make.
What Does The Term Organic Mean?
Dictionary.com gives this meaning for the word “organic:” pertaining to, involving, or grown with fertilizers or pesticides of animal or vegetable origin, as distinguished from manufactured chemicals. It makes sense that things found in nature should be healthier for us than ingredients manufactured from a chemical combination, so more and more consumers are looking for organic products. The USDA requires that food, which is labeled organic, be grown under certain very exacting standards that restrict the types of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and handling processes that can be used.
Food manufacturers cannot use the word organic on their labels unless the United States Department of Agriculture has inspected and certified the way the food was produced. However, the USDA is not nearly as rigid when it comes to products that are meant to be used on our skin, hair, or teeth. There is a system administered by the USDA that is called the National Organic Program, which will certify that the ingredients used in cosmetics and other products are indeed organic, but membership in the program is strictly voluntary. Therefore, companies in the beauty industry can use the word organic on their packaging or as a part of their brand name without any government regulation at all. As a consumer, the only way you can find out if a preparation you are using is truly organic is to read the fine print on the label very carefully and look for the National Organic Program’s certification. In short, if you see the word “organic” on your shampoo, toothpaste, dog food, or make-up, it really doesn’t mean a thing.
How Does Juice Beauty Stack Up?
The folks at Juice Beauty, however, seem to take their use of the word organic seriously. Their products are certified to be 95% organic, and the company has a patent pending on its organic juice base, which is used in all of its skin preparations. Unlike most cosmetics, which are composed mostly of water, the juice base is made from a combination of several fruits that are high in antioxidants. These are the vitamins that help to counteract the signs of aging. Juice Beauty products have ingredients that come from all around the world and are found to be effective at helping women to retain their natural youth and beauty.
SPF 30 Mineral Light
Women (and men) who desire to keep their skin young looking have known for years that their biggest enemy is dryness. For this reason, I spent most of my time examining the moisturizers offered by Juice Beauty. One of their top sellers is called SPF 30 Mineral Light. This is an interesting product that performs several functions at once. It is a sunscreen, a moisturizer, and light makeup, all at the same time. Since I have sensitive skin and have a hard time finding a sunscreen that does not irritate my face, I was interested in the product right away. After using it just a few times, I have to say that I was quite pleased. It goes on easily, provides enough coverage to even out my skin tone, and does not make my skin burn or break out. It tints my face just enough so that I feel like I can dash out of the house to run errands without adding any other foundation. It’s great to be able to do so much with the application of just one product.
Other Juice Beauty Products
The company sells a complete line of skin care items on its website including several other moisturizers, masks, cleansers, lip care creams, exfoliants and toners. All of them are made from organic sources and the list of ingredients in each item is easy to find on the web page. More impressively, the Juice Beauty folks have a glossary on their website that explains all the different plants, seeds, fruits, and flowers that are used to derive the ingredients. It really gave me confidence that the people who work there know what they are doing and live up to their mission of providing good, organic products for their customers.
The website is nicely organized and has a section for men and another for gift bags and baskets which I found to be handy. They also offer special reductions in price on specific products, from time to time, so I could check back often and have a chance to get a real bargain. There is a helpful feature called the Product Solution Wizard, which lets you enter the characteristics of your own skin, and any special problems you may have. The wizard will then point you to the items that will work best for you.
The Downside
There are a few negatives I noticed with Juice Beauty. First, is the lack of availability of a trial size product. The SPF 30 Mineral Light that I like costs $30, and I had to buy the whole thing in order to give it a try. They do offer a 14 day return policy, but that does not seem like enough time to decide whether a product will work for a person, or not.
While I feel like Juice Beauty provides quality products, I did not find anything that could firm my skin and give me a lift like LifeCell Skin. As an overall treatment for wrinkles and other signs of aging, it has to be considered the cream of the crop.
