Ageless: Is It All Hype?

Well, here is another one. Another product in a long line of skin care potions that claims to be able to reduce and even reverse the signs of aging on our skin. Ageless, by a company known as Rejuvenate Worldwide is touted as “the first and only product of its kind.” It is the only skincare product that the company sells and it claims to be able to produce visible results in just minutes. More than that, the Ageless website says that each time you use it, it will do more to turn back the clock and give your skin its former vitality and beauty. Those are some pretty fantastic claims. I decided to hop on my research horse, once again, and find out just what is in this magic elixir that gives it a basis for making these bold statements.

The first thing I noticed when reading the Ageless by Rejuvenate Worldwide website, is that there is almost as much information there about how to become a distributor of the product and make a lot of money doing it, as there is about the Ageless serum itself. That raised some red flags for me right there. Why does this company use so much of its online presence trying to get other people to sell their goods? Well, it could be because it is a new business and that is the way they are trying to get their name out there. So...I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and continue my research into just what this serum is.

What’s In It?

The first ingredients mentioned as being vital to the effectiveness of Ageless are aloe vera gel and citrus aurantium blend. I know what aloe vera gel is, and you probably do too. It is an extract made from the aloe vera cactus that has been used for centuries to help treat burns and other injuries to the skin. I can say from experience that it is good for treating sunburn and ordinary cuts and scrapes. It is soothing and cooling and does help burns (especially sunburn) heal faster. Does that mean it will work as an everyday treatment for my face? All the research I did on aloe vera made me doubtful. While it is truly an all-natural product, and may have some moisturizing properties, I could find no scientific study that indicated it would have any effect in reversing or repairing wrinkles, spots or other signs of aging.

Next, I investigated citrus aurantium. It is an essential oil that is made from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree. The fact that it is an oil means that it might help to combat dryness, but the major claim for the extract that I could find had to do with the calming, soothing effect its fragrance can have on your nerves and emotions. Well, Ok. If I put Ageless on my face, I can expect to get some help if I have a cut or a burn there. I might also get some temporary moisturizing effect, and my nerves might be calmed. The website claimed that these two ingredients can help encourage the production of new skin cells by stimulating the macrophage function at the cellular level. After referring to my medical dictionary once more, I learned the macrophage function is the ability of the cells in our bodies to fight off invaders and repair damage. Well, that makes sense if you want to repair damage to your skin caused by the sun and time. The only problem is, there is nothing that you can put on the surface of your skin that has been proven to increase this function. It helps your body fight off disease and heal injuries if you have the proper nutrition and general good health that a vital immune system requires. But, rubbing aloe and citrus oils on your face will not do anything to help that process along.

The next ingredients on the label of Ageless were hydrolyzed elastin and soluble collagen. Once again, these two terms are familiar. Elastin and collagen are names for proteins that are found in the tissues below the surface of our skin. Elastin helps skin retain its elastic properties and collagen is what gives our skin firmness and keeps it from bagging. Of course, if we could increase the amounts of these proteins that are found in our faces, we might be able to look younger. But merely rubbing such ingredients into our skin does nothing to help strengthen those deep layers and revitalize them.

CoQ10 is next on the list. This is the abbreviation for Coenzyme Q 10, which is a substance that is produced by the human body and is important for helping cells to multiply and replace themselves. We do tend to produce less CoQ10 as we age, and according to the Mayo Clinic, there are some prescription face creams with this ingredient that have been scientifically shown to diminish wrinkles and other skin imperfections. However, Mayo also states that over-the-counter remedies have a much lower concentration of this enzyme than those available from a dermatologist, and are therefore unlikely to be very beneficial.  

The final components of Ageless are listed as a form of Vitamin B5 and extracts from 12 different fruits and vegetables that act as antioxidants. Vitamin B5 is often used by cosmetic companies to moisturize skin and hair, and fruit and veggie derivatives are touted as natural beauty tools. Because all of these things are derived from nature rather than being synthetic or man-made, you can be quite assured that they will not do any harm to your complexion (barring allergies, of course.) However, there is nothing on this list, which can be considered new or revolutionary. People have been using these kinds of remedies at least since the days when Cleopatra is reported to have used aloe on her skin to combat the harsh sunshine of Egypt.
