Hand and Nail Care
What Do Your Hands Say About You?
As members of the baby boom generation reach retirement age and beyond, they tend to devote more attention to retaining their youthful appearance and vigor. It seems that people, “of a certain age,” are determined to enjoy their active lifestyles well into their 60’s and 70’s, and they want to look the part. Those in this generation do not want to quietly fade away into their rocking chairs and take up knitting or whittling for their Golden Years. Acting young means looking young, so the market for anti-aging products has become huge.
Interestingly, however, most folks tend to focus nearly all their age-defying efforts on their necks and faces. This happens even though studies show that a person’s hands convey nearly as much about them as their faces. Hands that are rough, dry, spotted, or chapped can add years to your looks. Nails that are neglected, grubby, broken, or poorly shaped tend to make others think that you are busy, and frazzled, and do not have a lot of pride in your appearance. There are a few easy things you can do, however, to keep your hands looking youthful and attractive.
First and foremost, keep your hands clean. This may seem obvious, but it’s surprising how many of our daily activities can leave stains and residue on our nails or fingers. If you are a gardener, crafter, artist, chemist, chef, or beautician, you work with substances that can cling to your hands and destroy their appearance. Try leaving a nailbrush at every place where you wash up and use it liberally, on your skin and nails alike. The soft bristles feel great, and will go a long way toward removing any leftover blemishes on your hands.
Apply a high-quality hand moisturizer several times a day. Many products on the market are designed especially for hands, and do a good job at restoring the natural oils that are stripped away by daily activities. There are also hand creams that are packed with antioxidants that will help your skin cells regenerate at a faster clip and keep away the signs of aging. If you find a moisturizer you like, keep it in a pump dispenser at several locations around your home or office so that you can use it whenever you happen to come across it through the day.
Protect your hands from the sun. It’s easy to remember to apply sunscreen on your face, but don’t forget your hands. They actually receive more UV exposure than any other part of your body, and that is the reason that hands are prone to age spots, wrinkles, and other sun damage. If you use a daily facial moisturizer with sunscreen, put it on the backs of your hands, too. Reapply whenever you will be spending a significant amount of time outside.
Wear gloves whenever you need to do something that involves a harsh chemical or prolonged exposure to water. This is especially true of cleaning with bleach or ammonia, or engaging in hobbies that involve paint, dye or ink. It is much easier to keep your hands away from damaging substances than it is to repair them afterward. If you have always hated traditional household rubber gloves, look around for other types. After all, chefs, dentists, surgeons, and many other professionals do most of their work while wearing gloves. There is no reason the gloves you wear need to be clumsy. Check out restaurant or medical supply stores to find gloves that will protect your hands while still allowing you ease of movement to do the things you need or want to do.
Get some thin cotton gloves that you can wear at night. If you apply your favorite moisturizer before you go to bed, then don these little beauties; your hands will receive the equivalent of a spa treatment all night long. The benefits will be enormous, and will require hardly any time from you.
With just a little time and effort, your hands can say that you are young, vigorous, and ready to take on the world.
