What Are the Benefits of a Home Foot Spa Machine?

One of the most popular holiday gift items of the last few years has been a mini-spa that offers the benefits of a salon-style pedicure in the comfort of your home. These personal care appliances are large enough to soak both of your feet at the same time and come with a variety of features. They may offer two or more cycles of jetted water bubbles. Some models supply heat for the water or massaging pads for your feet. Some even claim to ionize the toxins in your body and remove them through your feet. So can we believe all these claims? Are these handy little gadgets worth the money they cost or can you get the same benefits from your own bathtub or just a dishpan full of water?  After reading several manufacturer’s websites and dozens of consumer reviews, here are the conclusions I have reached.

· These mini-spas do provide a good place to soak your feet. If you like to give yourself pedicures, or have sore feet that need a rejuvenating treatment now and then, you may very well appreciate one of these appliances. Most models claim to fit people who wear up to a size 12 men’s shoe. This is often hard to achieve just by using a dishpan or other kitchen container.

· Folks who have a chronic foot condition, wounds or inflammation should be sure to consult their doctor before using one of these appliances.

· Athletes or others who often have sore or swollen ankles because of poor circulation or old injuries will also appreciate the fact that these tubs are quite deep. You should be able to cover your whole foot easily, and some models will even let the water reach your high ankle area.

· Models that will heat the water and keep it at a toasty 1150 are especially useful for people whose feet are often cold. Warm water will also soften corns and calluses that bother many people, making them easier to remove.

· Most users praise the jetted water bubbles. Some folks say that their feet feel much better after using a foot spa, even when their occupation requires them to stand or walk for most of the day. The motion of the water does increase circulation in the feet and will help them to heal from injury.

· Many users like the interchangeable arch plates that go in the bottom of the tubs. They allow the user to choose whether they want firmer or gentler stimulation on their arches and heels.

· Tubs that allow the user to turn them on and off with their feet are very handy. Models that required them to lean over and grope for an on/off switch irritated some users.

· Some models that are especially designed for those who want to give themselves pedicures come with a set of attachments such as pumice stones or exfoliating brushes that help to remove dry skin and make feet smooth.

The so-called ionic foot baths look like the other types with a few electrodes attached. The idea here is that you use salt water for your foot soak. Then electrical current that passes through the water changes the electrical charge of toxins in your body by “ionizing” them and causes them to be expelled through the skin of your feet. There is very little if any scientific research that supports these claims. It is true that the water in your footbath may change colors. While the manufacturers of these appliances claim that is proof that the poisons are leaving your body, most scientists think that it is more likely the color change happens because of corrosion of the metal electrodes. When the salt in the water and the chemicals on your skin interact with this corrosion, you may indeed see a change of color in your water, but it is doubtful that you have less toxins in your body.
