Give Yourself a Pedicure

Knowing that your feet look great can be a big boost for most women. Surveys suggest that we often consider our feet to be one of the “least attractive” parts of our bodies. Nothing takes the fun out of getting ready to put on a great pair of strappy sandals faster than admitting that your feet are callused and cracked with pitiful, grubby toenails. While a salon pedicure can be pricey and time consuming, it is really not hard to give yourself that luxurious treatment at home. If you can invite some girlfriends over for an “at home spa night,” and fancy up each other’s toes, so much the better. But even if you are attending to your own feet, you can get a terrific result. Here are some things you should know in order to give yourself the best pedicure ever.

· Gather all the things you will need before you begin. It’s a good idea to invest in some high-quality, sharp nail clippers. They will last for years and will give you a clean, smooth cut. The drugstore clippers tend to leave the nail rough, and may even damage it.

· Prepare a salt rub before your begin your treatment. Combine about 1 tablespoon of sea salt or table salt with 1 teaspoon of any essential oil that you like. You also use a bath oil, or even olive oil. Mix this together and put it near your pedicure site.

· Find a flat-bottomed basin that is big enough for both of your feet and fill it half full with warm water. Add some bath salts to the water, or use about a cup of milk if you have thick calluses.

· Be sure you have some folded towels on the floor next to the basin. Also, place some lotion, polish remover, cotton pads, orangewood stick, emery board, and polish within easy reach.

· Remove any old polish with cotton pads and acetone remover. Cotton balls tend to leave little fuzzies on your toes, so the pads are better.

· Soak your feet in the basin for about twenty minutes. Your experience will be more relaxing if you have some soothing music playing or a favorite TV show on.

· After the soak, use your prepared salt rub to remove callused skin. Rub each foot for about five minutes, paying special attention to your heels. Then rinse, and apply a high-moisture foot cream. Try to use a moisturizer that is especially formulated for your feet, as they will typically be thicker and richer than those made for your hands. Apply the cream to your feet and lower legs using an upwards motion that will revitalize you and give you a lift.

· Clean under your nails and trim them straight across. Round the corners carefully with your emery board. Be sure to file only in one direction from the outside to the center.

· Push back cuticles with your orangewood stick.

· Apply a good polish basecoat. Try not to get any polish on your cuticles, but if you miss, use an orangewood stick wrapped in a tiny bit of remover-soaked cotton to take it off.

· Allow plenty of time for the basecoat to dry, then put on two thin coats of your favorite nail color. Don’t give in to the temptation to put it on thickly. It will take longer to dry and be more likely to chip.

Finish your pedicure with a clear topcoat that will protect your color. Apply one more layer of lotion and enjoy those sandals!
