Help for Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, you probably know it. It feels tight, and parched, and may even peel, flake or look cracked. Many folks have dry skin in certain spots like their heels or knees, for example, and normal or even oily skin in other areas. Dry skin is caused because oil glands in the skin do not produce enough lubricating fluid to keep the skin moist. It then becomes dehydrated. If your skin is regularly exposed to sun, wind, cold, harsh soaps, or chemicals, the dryness can become worse. Here are few things you should know if dry skin is a problem for you.

· Dry skin can be a symptom of a serious health problem like diabetes or a thyroid condition. If your dry skin began suddenly, or has become noticeably worse without explanation, be sure to see your doctor.

· Sometimes dry skin is aggravated by nutritional deficiencies like the lack of Vitamin A or B in your diet. Be sure you are eating a balanced diet for the sake of your overall health as well as the condition of your skin.

· Some rashes, and conditions like eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and rosacea can be confused with simple dry skin. If you have any doubt, consult a dermatologist.

· Certain prescription medications can cause dry skin. If you are taking something on the recommendation of your doctor, read the drug information on the package to see if it could be a possible cause for your skin problems.

· Assuming that your dry skin issues are the simple kind caused by wind, weather, genetics, or age, there are plenty of things that you can do to improve it.

· Do not use hot water to shower or wash your face if your skin is dry. That merely strips away the natural oils that should be present.

· Tap water that contains a lot of dissolved solids can leave deposits on your skin that make dryness worse. Consider using distilled water or mineral water to wash your face.

· Washcloths and body buffers also remove natural oils. Instead of cleansing with these, try using a spray bottle to apply a light mist of cleanser and just pat dry when you are done.

· Never use soap with detergent. Instead, find a pH-balanced gentle cleanser that can remove grime and makeup without drying.

· Use a moisturizer with sun screen every morning. Glycerin and aloe are known as moisturizing ingredients, so look for products with them in the ingredient list.

· Apply your moisturizer after your shower while your skin is still damp. This will help to trap humidity next to the skin where it can do some good.

· Use a nighttime lotion or cream, as well. Pay special attention at night to the extra-dry areas like your heels, knees, elbows, lips, and eye area.

· Consider trying a milk bath once a week for all-over dryness relief. Put about 8 oz. of powdered milk into your warm (not hot) bathtub. Add a tablespoon of almond oil and a few drops of your favorite fragrance. Soak for at least ten minutes while you let this formula do its magic on your parched skin.

Be sure you drink lots of water every day. This is especially important during the winter months. You may not feel as thirsty during cool weather as you do in the summer time, but your body still needs to be thoroughly hydrated. If you are even a little bit dehydrated, your skin will be the first place to suffer.
